Love those pictures of the Yippies, especially the one of the pirate ship. What a crazy piece of Disneyland history!

Hey Sue, thanks for reading! Before researching this event, I had heard there was a hippie protest in Disneyland, but I didn't know the specifics. There are some terrific articles online about the Yippie protest, known as Yippie Day, and these articles have better pictures. The Yippies had some additional demands (which were pretty wild), including: a “Black Panther Hot Breakfast” at the Aunt Jemima Pancake House, a liberation of Minnie Mouse from her male oppressors in Fantasyland, a “Self Defense Collective” at the Frontierland Shooting Gallery, and a 3pm barbecue of Porky Pig (who, of course, is not a Disney character). Their main objective was to end Disneyland's relationship with the Bank of America, but they were unsuccessful. As a Disney nerd, to me the biggest take away was this event prompted Disneyland to enforce a strict dress code, which would stay in place for a number of years.
