The Wilderness Must be Explored
Greetings readers, and welcome to our latest round of Disney trivia!
The marvelous folks with the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) have announced the recipients of their 2021 DCF Conservation Grants. Today’s trivia post is centered around Disney’s contributions to conservation and nature.
The Walt Disney Company has enjoyed a long legacy of supporting conservation efforts, beginning with company founder, Walt Disney. Walt chose animals as the subjects of his early cartoon shorts, and he viewed nature as a valuable resource to be both admired and respected.
It wasn’t long before Walt was investing his time and energy in assisting with conservation campaigns, and focusing on creating wildlife documentaries.
True Life Adventures
In 1948, Walt Disney received an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film as the producer of Seal Island. Over the next 20 years, Walt Disney would go on to produce 14 wildlife documentaries for his series, A True Life Adventure.
It has been said Walt and his team of filmmakers pioneered the genre of wildlife documentaries and the Walt Disney Company, through its Disneynature brand, carries on the legacy.
“Conservation isn’t just the business of a few people. It’s a matter that concerns all of us.”
-Walt Disney
Building a Legacy
In the early 1990’s, Walt Disney Imagineering began to develop plans to build a new animal-themed park, then called Disney’s Wild Animal Kingdom, at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida.
Disney formally announced plans for the construction of the park in 1995, and it was in the same year Disney announced the creation of the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF). During its first year of operation, the Disney Conservation Fund awarded grants to 39 projects supporting wildlife in wild places.
“We did not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”.
-Chief Seattle, Suquamish Tribe, Washington State
Twenty-five years later, the Disney Conservation Fund, through the financial support of guest donations, has made quite an impact.
“The Greatest Natural Resource is the minds of our children.”
-Walt Disney
